At its core, our community space serves as a hub where people of all backgronds can meet developing a sense of belonging and mutual support.
The C.E.D.A.R.S. - The Centre of Employment of the Disabled and Retired of Rayleigh Society – was set up in 1979. However, our building has been part of Rayleigh’s history since 1932 when it was Rayleigh’s first Fire Station and it still has the original entrance doors for the old fire engines.
The plan for the CEDARS was to find ‘piece work’ to supplement the income of the elderly and disabled but this never happened. Instead, the Centre became a place where older people could meet to share and learn new skills, and enjoy the company of others. It has been continuing this valuable work ever since.
